From the Mintal province of Dunjark, Atok experienced an early desire to help others. Mintal is a wealthy province between the heart of Dunjar society and the slums. A Dunjar order called The Chaplains recruited Atok when they saw him save a poor citizen being beaten by a local criminal. Under the training of The Chaplains, Atok discovered his gift to foresee danger. Once his ability was discovered, the Dunjar military quickly recruited him to accompany their galactic explorations.
